HOW TO CLEANSE TAROT CARDS

Cleansing a tarot deck means resetting it — clearing the residue of a heavy reading, another person’s handling, or just long storage. To be clear: nothing bad lives in your cards, and you don’t have to do any of this. But most readers find a small reset ritual genuinely helps them start fresh. Here are the seven methods people actually use.

Seven ways to cleanse a tarot deck

  • Knock on the deck — three sharp raps, like knocking on a door. The quickest reset; many readers do this and nothing else.
  • Sort it back to order — Fool to World, then each suit Ace to King. Meditative, and you get a full inventory of your deck for free.
  • Moonlight — leave the deck on a windowsill overnight, traditionally at full moon. The classic.
  • Smoke — pass the deck through incense or herb smoke a few times. Pick a scent you actually like; you’ll be smelling it.
  • Salt, sealed — bury the deck in a jar of dry salt overnight. Use a sealed bag inside the jar, or the salt will roughen the card edges.
  • A crystal on top — clear quartz or selenite resting on the deck between readings. Zero effort once it’s in place.
  • Breath and intention — hold the deck, take one slow breath, and decide it’s clear. The method behind every other method.

When should you cleanse your cards?

Four moments come up again and again:

  • A new deck — secondhand or fresh from shrink-wrap, a reset marks it as yours
  • After reading for someone else, especially about something heavy
  • After a reading that rattled you
  • When a deck has sat unused for months

Do you need to cleanse before every reading?

No — that’s overkill, and it turns a nice ritual into homework. A good shuffle is itself a reset: it randomizes the deck and settles your attention. Save the fuller cleansing for the four moments above, and let the shuffle handle the everyday.

Does cleansing actually do anything?

Honestly: what it reliably changes is you, not the cardboard. A cleansing ritual draws a line — that reading is over, this one is new — and that line makes readings calmer and less muddy. Whether anything metaphysical happens is yours to decide; the psychological reset alone earns the thirty seconds.
